Democracy Defenders

Democracy is on the line. It’s time to defend it, together.

Mission

The Democracy Defenders program is a pro-democracy coalition dedicated to advancing democratic values and mobilizing grassroots change throughout Michigan. The program empowers folks from across the state to become “Democracy Defenders,” community leaders who mobilize communities to elect pro-democracy candidates, implement pro-voting policies, and educate others on the rights and responsibilities of voting.

The Democracy Defenders program is committed to involving the people by engaging community leaders, providing resources and training, and cultivating networks that uplift every voice in decision-making processes. Defending democracy is hard work, but your energy and dedication are essential to creating a legacy of democracy that lasts.

Program Design

Our goal is to facilitate a decentralized network of change-makers who receive guidance, support, and material know-how from a “command hub” to build and sustain a strong democracy from the ground up. To maintain momentum and connection, we will hold regular virtual meetings to check in, discuss progress, address challenges, and support each other in our pursuits. Keen adaptability and fervent energy will drive our success through the election and beyond.

Defender Duties

Democracy defenders will advocate for democracy on the frontlines by leading initiatives, mobilizing community support, engaging in voter protection efforts, and combating misinformation both online and offline. To accommodate varying levels of availability and commitment, the program offers three primary “Defender” roles: a Chief Defender, Deputy Defender, and Digital Defender. While the responsibilities of Defenders may overlap––a Chief or Deputy Defender may also take on the role of Digital Defender, for instance––these roles are designed to provide clarity, structure, and flexibility to all who seek to advance our mission according to their unique strengths. The responsibilities and expectations attached to each role are summarized on the back page.
